Recipes for Great Home Cooked Meals for Dogs

Some of us love to cook for our four-legged friends and create nutritious and delicious home-cooked meals.  Whilst specifically prepared dog food is specially formulated; sometimes we like to take that little bit of time to make something special for our big dogs.

Home Cooked Meals for Dogs

The following sets of ingredients are some options:

Option 1 – Turkey, Rice & Veges (or Alternate with chicken mince or boneless chicken pieces)

  • 1 1/2 cups rice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 pounds ground turkey
  • 3 cups baby spinach, chopped
  • 2 carrots, shredded
  • 1 zucchini, shredded
  • 1/2 cup peas, canned or frozen

Option 2 – Fish & Broccoli

  • 1 1/2 cups rice
  • Fish, tuna, salmon or similar fish
  • 2 cup of broccoli pieces, chopped
  • 1 cup of pumpkin pieces
  • 1 zucchini or similar green vegetable

 Option 3 – Doggie Stew

  • 1 pound beef stew meat (no bones)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Small sweet potato
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 cup mixed green veges, like beans
  • 1 cup of diced or grated carrot
  • Water and flour to thicken

Quite simply, cook the rice, brown the meat or chicken, then put everything together, add the veges, plus some water so it’s not too dry.  A little flour may make for a better consistency.

Remember, there is no need to overcook the veges and absolutely no need to add spices.  Be sure to avoid things like onions and garlic; these things are somewhat toxic for dogs.   Keep it clean and simple.  Your dog will appreciate it.

Finally, be sure the food has cooled completely before serving.

Make sure that our furbabies drink lots of water. Check out this tall water bowl.

We’d love your suggestions and ideas for home cooked meals for big dogs; simply send to woof@4bigdogs.com.au and be sure to include your pooch’s name.  By sending in your recipe, you agree we can share it … but we’ll name it something like:  Duke’s Favourite Beef Dinner, or Jessie’s Chicken Delight.   Feel free to share a pic of your dog as well with the recipe; we love sharing pics of dogs  😊
