We love the utility multi-lead, and it’s not just a blatant sell. We only sell products that the dogs and I love on 4 Big Dogs – after they’ve been proven tried and true. Yes, at times our dogs are guinea pigs (although we call them Testing Inspectors), but that means we’re only recommending products we truly do love.
What is The Utility Multi-Lead?
For a start, this is an authentic Rogz product. They are sold, durable and strong enough for big dogs. The utility leads we have (have two actually in each household) are 1.8m (6 feet long). That’s the larger size, although you can get smaller ones. This size is fabulous for big dogs and even usable for smaller dogs. The lead has a dog clip at both ends. I’ll explain that benefit shortly. It has reflective stitching on both sides of the lead and has 3 rings along the lead. It also has two small accessories to which you can attach poop bags, or a poop bag holder (or any of the many hooks).
The first ring is 17cm from the end - let’s call that ring A. The second ring is 34cm from the other end of the lead. Let’s call that ring B. The third ring (yep, we’ll call it ring C) is near the middle of the lead.
Choice of Handles
Rings A or B mean you can have a single dog on one end and the other end clips into either Ring A or B. Ring A is a handle that is smaller, and fits more within your palm, or good if you’ve quite small hands. However, if you want a larger handle or have larger hands, then clip the end to Ring B for a larger handle. Obviously, have your dog on the other end. 😊
Clipping Your Dog to Something
With your dog on one end of the lead, you can use the other clip to clip them to something, such as a wire fence, or something small which the clip will fit into. However, if you wanted to attach them to say a post, use the end with Ring B and unclip your ‘handle’ and wrap it around the post and re-clip. This is great, because you don’t have to unclip the dog, and thread their lead around the post and then re-clip them. Much quicker and easier.
Want a Long Lead, Perhaps Whilst Outside or Bush Walking or Camping?
Put 2 leads together. Those extender leads you see little dogs on really don’t work for a larger, heavier and strong dog. Theo snapped one “especially for German Shepards” after a single walk. What a waste of money that was! You simply click the first lead to the other, so you’ve now got a lead which is over 3.5 metres long. Safe, secure and strong, but longer.
Multiple Lengths on A Single Lead
Some people, especially whilst training, or walking in a crowded place, prefer their dog on a shorter lead; these utility leads are great for that. You have multiple size length options, really just depending on what hook you select from which end. With a very short lead, you can even double clip the extra within your hand, so you’ve not got anything long dragging or a handful of lead.
Body Lead
If you want to be hands-free, you can even clip the lead around your waist and then clip the end to your dog – so they are close to you, and you are hands-free. Heads up though, there are really only two size options as it’s not super adjustable. Whilst I’ve not tested it, I guess you could clip them to a belt you’re wearing if neither of the two sizes don’t work for you.
Pullers or Need for Extra Control
If your harness has a clip at the top and on the chest, and they are a puller, or you need to have better control, then the utility lead is perfect. One clip on the top and one at the chest, with you holding the middle, essentially providing you with what we call ‘two-point steering’.
Two Dogs are Better Than One
If you’ve got two dogs, then the utility lead is awesome. No more getting tangled up in multiple leads, or having both hands totally occupied and being essentially pulled in two different directions. With the utility lead, you’ve two hooks, so one on each hook and you holding the middle. Even with small dogs (I’ve walked a friend's dogs and used my utility lead and worked just a treat). They don’t knot up and even if they change position, it’s easy to just re-position your hand.
So, as you can see, this is a super versatile, well-made, strong and durable product, ideal for big dogs, but also great for a couple of small dogs. I also love that you can pop it in the washing machine and it comes out looking almost new. If you do beach trips, be sure to wash them in clean water afterwards and ensure sand (and salt) are out of the clips, even adding a little WD40 if need be. I’ve had mine now for years and absolutely no regrets; they last forever, so an excellent investment. Hence, why we sell them and I rave about them time and time again. Better than any other lead I’ve ever used!
